Six Flags St. Louis Full park review for 2022

Six Flags St. Louis opened on June 5, 1971. It was the third park in the Six Flags chain. They currently are home to 9 roller coasters, an admission included Water Park, and a bunch of other rides for you and your group to enjoy.

Six Flags St. Louis Coaster Collection

Six Flags S. Louis has a total of nine roller coasters to thrill you. You can ride the very mild River King Mine Train and get all the way up to extreme coasters like The Boss and Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast. We really like the lineup of coasters at the park.

Six Flags St. Louis Loopers

Entrance into Gotham City

Batman: The Ride, Boomerang, and Ninja will please those who love going upside down. Batman is the best of those three. It is a phenomenal coaster but it has been cloned so many times that it isn’t a coaster one needs to come to this park to experience. Boomerang even more so on the cloned side. Ninja is an infamous coaster. Known as terrible because of how rough it supposedly is. However, I cannot say I agree with that. In reality it is a decent coaster. Not bad, but has issues.

Wooden Coasters

The Screamin' Eagle on its second hill about to pass the station.

Wooden Coasters enthusiasts will be very pleased with this park. They have a total of three that each offers its own experience. You have a classic in Screamin’ Eagle. Classic yet packs a real punch! You have the massive Boss. It is huge but has been getting rough. Lastly is American Thunder. This is a very compact airtime machine built by GCI.

Family Coasters

River King Mine Tain at Six Flags St. Louis

Pandemonium is the park’s spinning coaster. It offers mild thrills and is considered a family coaster. Pandemonium, River King Mine Train, and Screamin’ Eagle can all be ridden as long as you are forty-two inches. In Pandemonium’s case, you need to be accompanied by an adult to ride at that height.

Needs Improvement

They are missing two things that could really put this collection over the top. First, this park needs a kid’s coaster. They do have the mine train but that is only for kids forty-two inches or above. This kind of thing is pretty standard in parks of this size so its omission is noticed.

Six Flags St. Louis could really use a signature coaster. Most parks have one truly outstanding coaster that brings people from all over just to ride this one. Most of the coasters here feel like really solid additions to a lineup but just missing that one. If they were to RMC Boss, or build a B&M Hyper that would do the trick.

New for 2022 Catwoman Whip

More freaked out riders on Catwoman Whip at Six Flags St. Louis

The newest ride for the park is Catwoman Whip. It is a great ride with a long and thrilling cycle. It is a must-ride when visiting the park. Just be warned about its biggest flaw. The line moves slower than any other in the park. We highly recommend you ride it but make this one of your first stops in the day to avoid long lines.

Six Flags St. Louis other rides

The park has a good collection of water, flat, and transportation rides. Some are what would be considered cornerstones of theme parks. Yet you will find a couple of very unique rides as well.

Xcalibur is Unique

Xcalibur just getting started.

In the unique category, you have the likes of Xcalibur. Only three of this kind were ever built with this being the only one operating in the United States. Also, it is known for being an extremely intense ride. It is enjoyable just to stand back and watch it.

Water Rides

Log Flume at Six Flags St. Louis.

The summers in St. Louis can get quite hot so it is good to get on some water rides. They have a classic Log Flume, a roaring rapids ride called Thunder River, and Tsunami Soakers. Log Flume was an original ride that opened with the park. It’s a lot of fun and has great capacity. Thunder River is something your whole group can cool off in. The boats hold twelve. This is always one of the more popular rides when it gets hot. With Tsunami Soakers it is a water gunboat ride. You can shoot other boats and even those outside the ride.

The Train

One of the best attractions for any size group is the train. The Tommy G. Robertson Railroad will take you around the whole park with live commentary. This is a real steam-powered locomotive. The land that Six Flags St. Louis sits on is very beautiful. A trip around on the train is one the best ways to experience it!

High Thrills

If you are looking for a thrilling experience you can challenge Supergirl Sky Flyer, Fireball, and Skyscreamers. Supergirl is a very intense spinning ride that lifts up and flips you upside down before returning you safely to the ground. It looks beautiful at night time with the best lightening package in the park.

SkyScreamer at Six Flags St. Louis going very high into the sky.

Fireball does one thing. It will flip you upside down backward and forwards. This is in my opinion the most intense ride in the park. The feeling of being hung upside down for around five seconds shouldn’t be done after eating. It is fun and has a great look to it.

Skyscreamers can be an intimidating ride. This is a swing set that goes up 235 feet! The feeling of speed while up there is very impressive.

Mild Thrills

For mild thrillseekers, you can take your group Spinsanity, Joker, Shazam, and Justice League: Battle for Metropolis. Spinsanity is a very fun spinning ride that sits on a half-pipe. It is great fun to ride and gives a great sensation of speed. Undeniably Spinsanity has some of the most comfortable restraints on a ride.

The entrace to Joker with him laughing at you. The swing pirate ship is in the background

Joker and Shazam are very standard rides for theme parks. Joker is a swinging Pirate ship ride. Nothing about the ride is any different than what you will find at most theme parks. What does stand out is the Joker-theming. It is a fun element and helps this one stand out. With Shazam, it is a Scrambler with a very awkward attempt at theming to Shazam which is a DC superhero. Good thing the ride is fun!

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis is one of the outstanding rides at the park. It is a 4D Darkride competitive shooter. The theming is truly excellent with this being a Six Flags ride. Make sure and hit this one up early since its line will get longer as the day goes on.

Under Construction

The Grand Ole Carousel is beautiful but just be warned. It is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment for the 2021 season. It is likely to open in 2023 but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Because they are taking their time and getting it right!

See the whole park

Colossus at Six Flags St. Louis.

Last we have the most relaxing and scenic ride of them all. Six Flags St. Louis has a huge Ferris Wheel called Colossus. You are able to see every part of the park while cresting the top. You can also see for miles outside the park from up there! Additionally it lights it up at night time and is a great addition to the skyline of the park.

Hurricane Harbor

It cannot be stated enough. The fact that Hurricane Harbor is included in the price of admission to the main park is one of the greatest value adds around. You pay one price to enter the park and you can come and go as you please in the main and water park.

Hurricane Harbors opens on Memorial Day Weekend. It normally will open its gate to get about an hour from when the main park opens. You will find a great selection of slides, pools, food, and shopping.

Main attractions

The three main areas of Hurricane Harbor are Hurricane Bay, Gulley Washer Creek, and Hook’s Lagoon. Hurricane Bay is the ever-popular Wave Pool. Great fun for all families and serves as the hub for the water park. Then you have Hook’s Lagoon. This is like a water playground. Really great fun for everyone! Lastly is Gulley Washer Creek which is the park’s Lazy River. Always a fun option when looking to relax.

Water Thrill Rides

If you want some thrill with your water ride then you can ride Wahoo Racer and Typhoon Twister, Tube Slides, Tornado Big Kahuna, and Bonzai Pipeline. Big Kahuna is one of my favorites. Since it is the one that you can do with the whole family. This one gets a long line so get to it early.

Wahoo Racer, Typhoon Twister, Tube Slides, and Tornado are great fun. The Tube Slides are ones you go down by yourself. Wahoo Racer is exactly what you would expect. It incorporates racing into the water slide. Typhoon Twister and Tornado are group ones. Tornado is one giant funnel that really thrills. Typhoon Twister has couple more elements but just isn’t as exciting as Tornado.

Bonzai Pipeline is one of the only rides in my adult life to freak me out. It’s a slide that begins with a trap door opening and you dropping through!

Bugs Bunny National Park

Bugs Bunny National Park is the section of kid’s rides the park offers. Each one is themed to a Bugs Bunny character. This is a great place to head to entertain the young ones in your group. It offers nine total attractions.

Spinning Kid Rides

Yosemite Sam Tugboat Tailspin

For those kids that like to spin there are Elmer Fudd Weather Balloons, Yosemite Sam Tugboat Tailspin, and Taz Twisters. All three offer something a little different. Since Both Taz and Elmer the adult can ride with them I give those higher marks. We always prefer the kid rides that the adults can experience with the kids.

Mild Spinning

Bugs Bunny Ranger Pilots

Bugs Bunny Ranger Pilots and Daffy Duck Stars on Parade do spin but offer a different experience. Ranger Pilots has kids get into an airplane that can go up in the air and spins around. But the spinning isn’t fast. With Daffy Duck, this is a little swing ride. Kids like it and it has a very good capacity.

Kids Who Like Heights

For kids who like heights, there is Bugs Bunny Fort Fun, Marvin the Martian Camp Invasion, and Tweetie Twee House. Fort Fun is a nice size playground. As of this writing, it is still currently closed. I Will update here once that is opened again. Marvin the Martian has riders get into a spaceship that goes up and down in a circular motion. Lastly, we have Tweetie. This is a very small drop tower. Not what an adult would call thrilling but kids really get a kick out of this one.

Needs a Kid Coaster

My only real disappointment with the kid’s park is the lack of a roller coaster. We need a Son of Boss! Something to help kids start loving coasters from a young age.

The food

Cheeseburger at Johnny Rockets.
Cheeseburger at Johnny Rockets.

The food options are very standard “Theme Park Food” at Six Flags St. Louis. The best two options are either Johnny Rockets for a Burger or JB’s Smokehouse BBQ for you guessed it Barbecue. They also have the standard pretzels, Dippin’ Dots, and Funnel Cakes. The standout in the dessert area is First Cone Parlor. Located right at the entrance of the main park is this shop. The smell of fresh-baked waffle cones is pretty much impossible to pass up. For a complete review of the restaurants at the park, you can see the rankings here.

The shows

Six Flags St. Louis shows are usually pretty good. My favorite is always the Miss Kitty’s Saloon shows. Because they have a great mix of humor and songs. Due to covid restrictions they are currently holding shows outside the Palace theater steps. They will have a different lineup of shows during Frightfest and Holiday in the Park.

The Shopping

You can find a lot of cool merchandise at the park. If you are looking for anything sugar-related then Coaster Candy will do the trick. If instead, you are wanting roller coaster-related merchandise your best option is to head to Thrillseekers by Colossus. Six Flags members then you will get a nice discount on your purchase.

Lodging

The park doesn’t have an official hotel to stay at but the Holiday Inn right next door is the best option. They are the most expensive option but the hotel and access to the park cannot be beat. You can check out their website to make a reservation. https://www.hisixflags.com/

The second closest option is the Super 8. It is less than a mile from the park. This is for sure the budget option but it is less than half the price of Holiday Inn. If this sounds good you can book your room from their site. https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/super-8/eureka-missouri/super-8-eureka-six-flags-nearby/overview

One really nice thing about the park is that it is located right off the highway. So even if you get a room couple miles away it is not that far of a drive to the park.

Final Verdict

The Inverted top hat is the most intense part of Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast

There is a lot to love about Six Flags St. Louis. The setting is beautiful. The park is kept good care of the grounds. The rides are well maintained. There is a lot to do regardless of the thrill you are seeking. The Coaster collection may be lacking a true standout but the variety, depth, and experiences to be had in their lineup are very good. A very good collection of flat rides helps compliment the coasters. The food is typical theme park food. Okay, options but won’t blow you away. Shopping is standard as well. Hurricane Harbor is one of the best elements of this park. Free admission to the water park with your general admission makes it a great value.

This is not the biggest or best Six Flags park. Yet I find this a vary fun and balanced park. On a scale of one to ten I give Six Flags St. Louis a 7.

Pros: Nine Roller Coasters, Xcalibur is Unique, Hurricane Harbor for no up charge, Lines are usually not long for most attractions

Cons: Restaurant lines typically move at a snails pace, No standout coaster or kid coaster,

  1. I always regret the day I saw the almighty Imperator on the Hamburger Sommerdom (a fun fair in Germany) in 2004 and did not ride it. After another fair, it disappeared. For me, this story is the reason why I want to visit Six Flags St.Louis for Xcalibur. Unfortunately, when I finally managed to get to St. Louis, the park was still in its preparation for the season 😢.

Thanks for the great overview of the park. If the pandemic comes to an end this year, I probably come to the park for a visit.
