Review of Colossus

Colossus at Six Flags St. Louis

Colossus operates at Six Flags, St. Louis. Originally built for the 1984 worlds fair in New Orleans. Then was relocated, and began operations at Six Flags St. Louis in 1986.

Colossus at Six Flags: Overview and Analysis

When driving to the park, it is one of the very first things that catch your eye from interstate 44. Most amusement parks that have a Ferris Wheel do not have one close to this size. Colossus is gigantic! I didn’t really appreciate that when I was younger. Since this is my home park, I just kind of took it for granted that this is what Ferris Wheels are. It was only after I started traveling to other Theme Parks that I started to realize just how special Colossus is.

It does have a theoretical, maximum speed of 10 mph. But that is only used when they’re testing it with no riders. Usually, it takes about thirteen minutes for Colossus to do a full rotation. There is always a sense of movement but never feels like you are going fast at all.

You, and up to six of your family, or friends can sit in the gondola, as you go higher and higher looking over the park. This is great because the land that Six Flags St. Louis sits on is very beautiful. When seen from the top it takes your breath away.

Colossus at Six Flags Lighting package

One of my favorite things about Colossus is the really cool lighting package. When the sun goes down, it really gives the skyline an extra boost. They will often do fun things like they make it be a clock in the off-season, or a Jack-o’-lantern during Fright Fest. My favorite time to ride Colossus is at night time during Holiday in the Park. When you go up 180 feet and you’re overlooking the beautiful park that has been decorated with million-plus lights, it truly is something to behold. Of course, make sure to bring a coat because it gets awfully cold up there.

The Colossus is a key flat ride for the park. I do not see them removing this one any time soon. The only recommendation I could possibly give for improving Colossus would be to touch up the paint on it. It is noticeable but would not consider it to be a big problem yet.

Final Verdict

I highly recommend Colossus at Six Flags, St. Louis. It is one of the best rides that help to complete the Theme Park experience. Speaking for myself and my family, we have such a great time for the around 13 minutes of fun and sightseeing that this ride offers. On a scale of one to ten. I would give Colossus a nine.

Pros: Huge, ride that can be shared with big group.

Cons: Paint could use some touching up.
