Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun has been operating at the park since it opened in 1973. The ride was Designed and manufactured by Intamin from their Flying Dutchman line. Riders are spun around in a pirate ship gondola at a gentle pace. Flying Dutchman is a fun family ride that offers decent thrills.

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun Experience

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun sits halfway into the park in the Europa Section. It’s right next to Falcon’s Flight and Autobahn. It is rare to find a long wait for this ride. So there is no need to prioritize this ride for wait time reasons. Riders must be at least 46 inches to ride alone. However, as long as an adult rider accompanies them, those under 46 can ride. You will be kept safe by a seat belt. Once the ride attendants have checked all the restraints, the fun can begin!

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun at Full speed will leave the gondolas at an angle.

Once the ride begins, your gondola will rise about 10 feet off the ground. Additionally, the ride will start to spin around the structure. The gondolas will be slanted at an angle when it is at full speed. The total ride time is around a minute and a half. Once the ride has come to a complete stop, the ride attendant will give the all-clear. Then, you can undo your restraints and exit the ride safely.

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun: The Good

We love the theming of this ride. The Pirate ship gondolas are such a fun theme. This ride doesn’t offer huge thrills and is firmly a family ride. We think Family rides should invest a little bit more into the look. Here they have provided a sharp-looking and fun theme that makes this a great family ride.

Keeping to the idea that this is a family ride is the height restrictions. Flying Dutchman is one the whole family can enjoy. As long as a kid can sit up on their own, they will be able to take to the high seas and get some spinning going!

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun from further back. Sits in a nice area with lots of trees.

Maybe this only matters to theme park nerds like us, but we love original rides at parks. This ride has made family memories since day one with Worlds of Fun! Kudos to the park for keeping the legacy going and making sure that this ride still operates and looks good this many years later!

The Bad

Flat rides can get tiresome if there is no variation in motion. That is an issue with Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun. Once this ride is at full speed, you have experienced everything. If the ride tilted or gave you a way to affect the airflow on your gondola, it would make this less monotonous. Everyone is different, but we have always noticed that spinning rides that don’t shake things up make us regret our portion size at Cotton Blossom Bar B Que. We can ride this once but never over and over.

Shows how much of an angle these get when at full speed. Just slightly at an angle.

Final Verdict

Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun is a great addition to the park. This classic ride has offered a great family experience since day one at the park. Also, it just has a charming look with the pirate ship gondolas. While not one we want to marathon since it offers no variation in motion, it is still one we make sure to ride once when visiting. Because of these reasons, Flying Dutchman at Worlds of Fun gets an eight out of ten.

The color scheme is yellow and brown.

A family ride that suffers from lackluster theming.
