Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom

Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom

Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom has been in operation since 1990. Designed and manufactured by Preston & Barbieri from their Ferris Wheel line. Riders are taken up and given a scenic tour of the kid’s park. This is fun for what it is, but why not just ride Giant Wheel instead?

Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom Experience

Sun & Moon is a kiddie ride that sits at the back of King Louie’s Playland. A stone’s throw away from Pounce & Bounce and Zepplin. From our experience, this doesn’t ever attract much of a line. Making it so there is no need to prioritize this ride over another. Riders must be at least 36 inches tall to ride alone, but anyone under 36 can ride with an adult supervisor. A seat belt and a chain lock on each gondola will keep you safe. After the ride attendant has checked all the restraints, the fun can begin!

When the ride begins the buckets will go up and then back down. It just works like you would expect a Ferris Wheel to work. The loading process has to be done one at a time. Also, the unloading will be done one gondola at a time. Once it is your time to exit the ride the attendant will stop your gondola and then you can remove your restraint. At this time you are able to exit the ride safely.

Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom: The Good

The ride just looks nice. The visual aesthetic really helps this ride stand out. The Superman colors this ride has just draws the attention of the eye.

Sun & Moon has blue and gold colors for the most part. With splashes of Red to make it pop.

While this offers nothing new to the Ferris Wheel experience it also does nothing to ruin it. There are some rides that are just classic theme park attractions that don’t need any update. We would say the Ferris Wheel fits that description.

We will always give some extra credit to any kid’s ride that lets the adults in on the experience. Young and old are good to hop on and make some memories!

The Bad

As long as a park has a Ferris Wheel, we find a kid version of it to be completely unnecessary. Kentucky Kingdom has a fantastic one with Giant Wheel! The question is why would anyone prefer to ride this over that? Kids might like it because kids always like a ride designed for them. Outside of that aspect, there is just no reason to ride this.

The loading and unloading process is a royal pain. One at a time on and one at a time getting off. You will spend more time boarding and leaving than having fun. There is no way to fix it either. A kid Ferris Wheel is almost always a bad idea for this reason.

Final Verdict

Sun & Moon at Kentucky Kingdom is an okay addition to the park. It will please its target audience. The process of getting on and off is a pain but the ride itself will still be fun. Its best aspect is how sharp-looking this is. While good-looking there is no getting around the fact that the park already has Giant Wheel. There is just no reason to ride this instead of that. Because of these reasons Sun & Moon gets a four out of ten.
