Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom has been in operation since 1992. Designed and manufactured by Vekoma from their Ferris Wheel line. This towering ride stands at 150 feet! Perfect if you want to see the coasters from a new angle or just looking to see Downtown Louisville.
Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom Experience
This Ferris Wheel towers over the park so you normally could find it by just walking towards it. However, with the very odd layout of the park, it is helpful to know that this sits on the edge of the water park. A rode separates Lightning Run and this ride.
The line moves at a pretty good rate so even when the line is long it usually isn’t that bad of a wait. They are no typical restraints on this ride, but the gondola you sit in has bars enough that no one is getting out. You must be 56 inches to ride this one alone but anyone over 36 inches can ride if they are accompanied by an adult. The ride attendant will give you some instructions as you are boarding. Once they give the all-clear the fun can begin!
Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom is a Ferris Wheel and doesn’t do anything odd. It rotates at a pretty decent speed and occasionally will stop to give you a good view. The whole ride lasts around ten minutes. Once you are back to the ground level they will open the door to your gondola. You can now exit the ride safely.
Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom: The Good
Ferris wheels are a lot of fun. There are a couple of things that make the Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom stand out. Firstly is if you have a Ferris wheel then size matters. We think that small Ferris wheels are no fun. Luckily this one is huge! Its structure can be seen everywhere in the park.
Secondly, the size of a Ferris wheel will only matter if the land on which it sits is pretty to look at. Kentucky Kingdom sits on a very unique piece of land. You are in a major part of the city. Airplanes are constantly taking off close by. There is just so much to look at when you are at the top!
The Bad
The complaints with this ride are very minor. We think it could use a fresh coat of paint. The inside of the gondolas has some signs of wear on them. But really this stuff is so minor. When we go to theme parks we try to find the positives and negatives to a ride for reviewing it. If we didn’t do that likely nothing here would have stuck out as bad. Likely none of it will for you.
Final Verdict
Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom is a great addition to the park. A Ferris wheel is one of those rides that we think is essential to the makeup of a theme park. They made it big and the park sits on beautiful land and that is about all you can ask out of a ride like this. Because of these reasons, Giant Wheel at Kentucky Kingdom gets a nine out of ten.
