Outlaw Run at Silver Dollar City

Outlaw Run has been in operation at Silver Dollar City since 2013. Manufactured by Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC). The legendary Alan Schilke designed this masterpiece. This was the second roller coaster by RMC in the world. New Texas Giant at Six Flags at Six Flags over Texas was their debut. It raised the bar on what a wooden roller coaster could do. Yet, Outlaw Run took it to the next level!

Outlaw Run history and theming

Silver Dollar City had a drought with roller coasters. Powder Keg was 2005 and Grand Expedition Coaster was 2006. That’s a gap of 7 years since a new roller coaster. I think it is because of this that the park was shooting for something special.

Outlaw Run has fairly simple theming. For example, the station looking like an old west town where stagecoaches would meet is really cool. Inside there are decorations but this isn’t next-level theming like they ended up with on Time Traveler. Not bad but maybe the only thing that is not outstanding.

How fast is Outlaw Run?

It Clocks in at a blistering top speed of 68 mph! The whole coaster is a blur once it gets going. The more secluded a coaster is the better sensation of speed you get. Because of how secluded this wooden coaster is it feels like you are flying through the track. Here again, is something that this coaster does right. So how fast is Outlaw Run? It is very fast and you will feel that speed the entire ride.

The Double Barrel finale as seen from the train.

Outlaw run is completely sectioned off from the rest of the park. It’s the reason why you don’t see a lot of photographs of this coaster that are not the same angles every time. Almost the entire coaster is tucked away into those Ozark hills. That really adds to the immersion since it doesn’t look like you are at a theme park once the ride gets going. Because of this night rides on this coaster are legendary. Outlaw Run is a masterpiece but if you haven’t ridden in the dark, then you have not ridden it at its best.

Outlaw Run is a wooden coaster?

It may be hard for people to remember but when Outlaw Run premiered wooden coasters did not do this. I remember the first time someone explained to me what Outlaw Run was. I thought that they had no idea what they were talking about. There was just no vocabulary for a coaster like this. Yes, there was the disaster that was Son of Beast but they cheated by making the loop steel. Alan Schilke and Rocky Mountain Construction truly brought something new and special to the table with this one.

A shot showing how secluded this coaster is.

Favorite Element

On a coaster this great picking my favorite element is hard. There isn’t one element that is not perfect. But if I’m to pick the most perfect I guess I would say it’s the double-barrel run finale. I love how it’s going upward while it’s flipping you upside down. This causes the trains to lose momentum as it is going. It feels like you are crawling through the finale! The entire double-barrel run feels like one long airtime element!

Some say it is rough

One of the inversions on Outlaw Run.

I have nothing bad to say about Outlaw Run. The most common complaint I hear is that it is a little rough. It’s a wooden roller coaster and it feels like one. I don’t find it overly rough. I don’t think this ride would be the same if it was butter smooth.

Final Verdict

Outlaw Run is an incredible addition to Silver Dollar City. Prior to the addition of this coaster, I paid very little attention to what they were doing in Branson Missouri. But with this coaster and now Time Traveler there is no enthusiast who can ignore this park any longer. Outlaw Run is the masterpiece of this incredible collection. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Outlaw Run a 10!

The train coming back into the station. Smiles all around.

Pros: The speed, the airtime, the inversions, and the setting are top notch.

Cons: little rough for some
