Moon Antique Cars: Overview and Analysis
The Moon Antique Cars were introduced to Six Flags St. Louis in 1971. Making them one of the only original rides still operating at the park. Most theme parks have a ride like this. They are old fashion vehicles that drive along a rail so you can let a very young child, in this case, anyone over 42 inches, get behind the driver seat, and take a stroll down memory lane.
It’s a very simple formula. They are a staple in the theme park industry for a very good reason. This was one of my favorites when I was a child. However, these Antique Moon Cars at Six Flags St. Louis have gone through a lot of changes over the years. Sad to say, not for the better.
Long Drives are Better
When introduced it was a very long ride. You would drive over, under, and through a bridge. Theming was set up to give that feeling of driving into times gone past. It was just generally a very pleasant leisurely experience. Yet as more and more riders got built the plot of land that the Moon Antique Cars sat on became smaller and smaller. Currently, from the moment you press the gas, and until the friendly Six Flags operator takes the wheel back from you, it’s about one minute. It’s just too short. Even at twice the length that it currently is, I would still think the same.
Management kept these cars running. I am glad they did, but mostly for selfish reasons. I currently have small children who think it is amazing to drive their parents around in a real car. Also I just like this type of ride. I would be sad to see them go away from the theme park industry. These need a better and bigger plot of land.
The only real great thing about the Antique Moon Cars at Six Flags St. Louis is that it does have one unique feature. The road does go inside the track of the wooden roller coaster American Thunder. That element is really cool.
Final Verdict
While I love rides like this, Moon Antique Cars as it currently stands is just not enough. Six Flags St. Louis either needs to give it a new place to call home or close the ride. Personally, I hope to see a bigger home for them. I think the park is better off with a ride like this than without them. On a scale of one to ten, I give the Moon Antique Cars a two and a half.
Pros: Nostalgia, Going inside track of American Thunder, 42 inches tall can drive
Cons: criminally short
