Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom has been in operation since 1990. Designed and manufactured by HUSS from their Breakdance line. Formerly known as Whirling Dervish, this spinning flat ride is sure to please all who decide to bust a move.
Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom Experience
When you enter the gates of Kentucky Kingdom, if you head to the left this will be the first ride you encounter. You will need to be at least 54 inches or taller to ride. You will be kept safe by a lap bar that will accommodate two riders. Once the ride attendant has checked your restraint the spinning can begin!
All of the gondolas sit on a sloped angle in bunches of four. The platform that the ride sits on will begin to rotate and at the same time, each bunch of gondolas will spin in a repeatable manner. The spinning will last about 2 minutes and begin to slow. When the ride has come to a complete stop the ride attendant will unlock your restraints. Those who can still see straight are able to exit the ride safely.
Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom: The Good
The ride duration is pretty great. Too many flat rides are over as soon as they begin. Not so with Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom! Even with accounting for the time it takes for the gondolas to get up to speed, and also slow down, the prime ride time here is quite good.
Flat rides are made or broken by the difference in motion. If they just do the same thing over and over again you will be tired of it before it is over. Breakdance has enough variation to keep it fresh the whole time. The violent way the gondolas will spin at certain points never gets old!
Lastly, we loved the pacing. It isn’t out-of-control fast but fast enough to give a good thrill.
The Bad
This is an extremely spinny ride that will make it or break it for some. If you like that type of thing then no issues, but even for seasoned riders like us, we felt a little queasy after this was over. A spinning ride will be more or less intense depending on the size of the circle spinning. Since this model sits on a slope on all sides the circle is pretty small that this ride spins on. Again this could be good or bad depending on your taste.
The ride’s minimum height limit of 54 inches strikes us as a bit too restrictive. We have personally seen a lot of families that had to keep walking because the parents couldn’t ride with the kids. Why doesn’t this ride allow smaller children to ride as long as accompanied by an adult rider? So if you are a group with young kids please take notice.
The name Breakdance doesn’t seem to fit this well. Major theme park nerdy nitpicking follows. The ride does in fact look like someone is breakdancing so we get that. But the gondolas and all the other theming don’t fit here. We think it should have kept that old name of Whirling Dervish. It fits this classic carnival-type ride better in our opinion.
Final Verdict
Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom is a great addition. It is a blast with its varying forces and great ride duration. Most of our complaints are very nitpicky but it is worth mentioning that this ride is rather intense. Basically, if you like spinning rides then you will have a blast. Because of these reasons, Breakdance at Kentucky Kingdom gets an eight and a half out of ten.
